According to the American Lung Association, carpet can act as a “sink” for chemical and biological pollutants including pesticides, dust mites, and fungi. This means that whenever you interact with you carpet by walking or otherwise having contact with it, you can disturb these contaminants and cause them to re-enter the air where they can be inhaled.
The best solution for this problem is regularly scheduled cleaning with an environmentally-safe tool that removes the contaminants from your carpet without aerating them. A water-filtering vacuum is a perfect way to accomplish this.
Carpets can hold a massive amount of junk sifted down between the fibers and even into the padding beneath the carpet.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency there are many potential contaminants in a home, including pet dander and hair, dust mites, secondhand smoke, mold, and pesticides. Many of these contaminants can play a role in allergies. Because carpet can collect these and other contaminants, regular cleaning of carpets is critical in reducing the impact of allergies.
These same contaminants can also exist in the workplace, further compounding problems. Because it is particularly important to remove these contaminants without causing them to be disturbed and blown back into the air where they can settle on other surfaces or be breathed in, it’s a good idea to clean your carpet with a water-filtered vacuum cleaner or even bring in a commercial steam cleaning company.
Before you decide on wood or laminate there are several things you should think about when you are planning, because there are several important differences between hardwood flooring and laminate flooring.
The most obvious differences between laminate flooring and hardwood flooring are strength, warranty and maintenance. Laminate is by far the strongest against scratches, scuffs and dings. The top layer of laminate flooring is sprayed with aluminum oxide at the factory and that is what gives it that almost armor tough surface.
Most laminate flooring companies offer 25 year warranties so if you have kids or pets or plan on staying in your home, warranties ensure that your laminate flooring will last. Laminate wood flooring cannot be sanded and refinished.
Hardwood flooring comes in solid wood planks like the kind in older homes or engineered wood with a wood prefinished surface. Solid Hard wood flooring scratches and dings easier and also wears faster than laminate flooring.
Solid Hardwood flooring does not stand up well under humid conditions as it expands and contracts under humid conditions. If you have a humidity concern laminate wood flooring will better manage the humidity problems and is often laid over concrete floors, something you would not do with solid wood flooring.
Solid hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished several times making it the longest lasting type of hardwood flooring. Engineered wood flooring handles humidity better than solid hardwood and is made from several layers of solid wood bonded with heat glue and pressure. Thicker engineered wood flooring can also be sanded and refinished several times.

Here are a few vinyl flooring tips
When deciding costs on replacing a vinyl or linoleum floor it is important to do research on the underlayment. The underlayment is what makes a vinyl floor last. You may want to spend a little more on the underlayment and a little less on the vinyl to make your floor last longer.
If you have a vinyl floor you should not wear shoes on it. For the ladies high heels will dig and leave holes in flooring that is make from vinyl. Take those shoes off at the door.
What is the Life Span of Polyester Carpet vs Nylon Carpet?
When replacing carpet you need to determine how long you want it to last then you can pick which material best fits your needs. If you are updating your home to sell it you don’t want to spend a lot, you just want it to look good so it sells. On the other hand if you are remodeling your home and don’t plan on selling it anytime soon then you want your carpet to last a long time. Typically polyester carpet lasts 5 to 7 years and nylon carpet lasts 15 to 20 years.
Of course you can make your carpet last longer by removing shoes at the doorway, regularly vacuuming and cleaning it.
